The third and sixth form year group was invited to the University of the West Indies open day in which they were engaged in various activities. We were engaged in a Q&A session with the presenter to provide clarity about any questions we had about each program. Tour guides gave the students a campus tour along with a breakdown of the various clubs and residence halls that the University has to offer. Information was presented to students to learn more about the programs offered at the institution. It was a very interesting experience and everyone learnt alot. After a full tour, we got to explore the campus freely for around two hours where the day ended with friends taking pictures on the campus and sleepy eyes on the way back to Mandeville. IMAGES
- PRINCIPALS REMARKS | Voice of deCarteret
Close Mrs. Prim Lewis Principals Remarks Inheriting the Leadership of a One Hundred Year Old institution with its rich history, pride, high levels of academic achievement and discipline is a most envied position that, an administrator, can ill afford to take lightly, and I certainly do not. The past two years and seven months have tested the mettle of all levels of the organisational structure, as well as, the tenacity of the staff, students and their families. However, we have all weathered the storm well. We are definitely not unscathed; however, our students have proven time and time again that they are resilient 'Builders’. We acknowledge our areas that are in need of growth; however, we are proud of our achievements in academics, sport and extracurricular activities. COVID 19 has thwarted our involvement in various activities, but we are emerging from the pandemic in a vibrant way. Our CSEC and CAPE results have once again brought us much pride and we will celebrate our students with the usual splendour on November 18, 2022, when we host our annual Prize Giving Ceremony. We are proud of the fact that we were able to Kick start our Cosmetology Programme in September 2022; this was stymied by COVID, as it should have begun in September 2020. We were finally able to complete the Industrial and Visual Arts Suite of courses, as we commenced offering Electrical Technology in October 2022. Staff Empowerment and Psychosocial are key to academic improvement; to this end we are grateful to have been able to conduct our first Face to Face Senior Management Retreat in August 2022, followed by our Face to Face staff Empowerment to start the new school year. We also resumed our monthly staff social at the beginning of October. Our stakeholders continue to lend invaluable support to the institution. This was in full effect with our Parent Teachers Association assisting with the renovation of two classrooms for the New School Year. Their most recent contribution was the repair of the roof of the computer lab and the music room which leaked badly after the passage of Ian, and they are excited about bringing Barbecue Back for December 2022. The Alumni stand by the institution in all our endeavours, most outstanding for this period are their involvement with the DaCosta Cup Football, where the management has led the team out of the 1st round. They also galvanised to host the Alumni Careers’ Day, which happened Face to Face for the first time since 2019, and was a huge success. The Alumni also supports a Welfare Programme at the institution which provides well needed support for students in need. We recently received a donation of school supplies and hygiene products which have been distributed to our students. Students are the heartbeat of any school. This Newsletter is a testimony to what well-meaning and positive youth leaders can achieve. I therefore congratulate Nineisha Lloyd and her team for realising this goal which will be a legacy that future ‘Builders’ will embrace and improve upon. The term has been marred by an unfortunate accident involving our dear student who is one of the brains behind this paper, (Nineisha Lloyd) which has caused her great difficulty. The board of governors, administration, staff and students pray for her speedy recovery and look forward to her successful return to school. Our theme for this school year is 'Promoting a Culture of Excellence through Accountability, Respect, Integrity, and Self-Discipline. It is our prayer that our deC family continues to grow in the beauty of God's Grace, as we seek to live our motto, Aedificamus. God helping us.

- TALENT SHOW | Voice of deCarteret
Close Prom Committee Talent Show On October 26,2022, the deCarteret College’s Sixth Form Prom Committee had their first fund-raising talent show for the beginning of the school year. After a long week of sleepless nights and continuous studying for exams for the first to fifth formers, this was a great stress relief for the students to come and enjoy the spectacular performances put on by various students. The talent showcased by each individual left the audience screaming and shouting for more. In all honesty this talent show was a success but it would not have been the success it was without the students that decided to purchase their tickets to show their support. Luckily, we should be expecting more fund-raising activities in the near future hosted by the Prom Committee to help raise funds towards next year’s first Prom being put on by DC therefore, continue to show your support for the cause and thank you!

- Under 14 and 16 Strides | Voice of deCarteret
HOME SEARCH RESULTS SPORTS BIRTHDAY WISHES SCHOOL CLUBS IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS STUDENT WELFARE DEAR PRINCIPAL DEAR LOWER SCHOOL STUDENT LIFE INSPIRATIONAL CORNER DeCarteret College continues to make strides as the under 14 and 16 footballers move on the second round of their respective competitions. by Tyreece Myles | November 17, 2022, Since the beginning of this academic year, our football team has been making waves and continues to do so. Never before in the history of the school have not only the DaCosta Cup team made it out of the group stages, but also the under 16 ( U16 ) and under 14 ( U14 ) as well. All three teams progressed to the second round during the same academic year. After the disheartening and cataclysmic defeat at the hands of Garvey Maceo, our dreams of winning the DaCosta Cup were thrown to the wind. But in swoops the under 14 and under 16 teams to recapture our hearts. Match after match, both teams have done us proud. The under 16 team had a notable run within the group stage, winning 60% of their matches. They kicked off the campaign against Belair High with a 2-2 draw. A 5-2 defeat at the hands of Manchester High followed. But they would rescue themselves by going on a three-game winning streak that lifted them out of the group stage. It all started with an enthralling and nerve-wracking comeback against May Day High which ended in a 4-3 victory. Winston Jones High was then beaten by a single goal and in the final game Maine was swept aside by a 3-0 score line. This was all thanks to impressive performances from Caleb Campbell, Najari Whitely and Andel Wright. The under 14 team was also tremendous in their route to qualifying for the second round. They boasted an impregnable defence and made it through the group stages unbeaten and without conceding a single goal, a phenomenal feat. Their season started with a 3-0 dismantling of Belair high followed by a valuable win against Manchester High. Mount Saint Joseph High were next to fall victim to the under 14’s might resulting in a 3-0 score to deCarteret College. May Day High were the only team to slow the onslaught by battling to a 0-0 draw. Maine, however, could not do the same, and were thrashed 4-0 in the final game of the group stages. As impressive as they were in front of goal, being clinical and free scoring, the defensive work put in was astounding. The willingness to put their bodies on the line, along with old fashioned hard work and determination hoisted the team and allowed them to reach greater heights. Some outstanding performers in the team were Mario Pitt, a scorer of 4 goals, and D’mitri Alexander.

A few days ago was internationally recognized as Mental Day, how have you been taking care of yourself since the start of fifth form mentally? Not so good. I have not been doing stuff I should be doing to take care of myself. 2. It’s your first time entering the gates of a public high school. Do you think that you have adjusted to the new environment despite the effects of COVID-19? I have adjusted pretty well, gotten to know the environment a bit better. 3. How do you feel now that you are doing fourteen (14) subjects instead of four? I did expect it so I have no particular feelings regarding it. 4. Mid-term assessments have begun; do you believe that you are sufficiently prepared for the upcoming exams? No, I do not think so. 5. How did you utilize the mid-term break to sufficiently prepare for your exams? I did nothing. 6. Do you have any advice for other students who might dislike studying or struggle to study any subject in general? I think you should try studying in a way that would be fun for you. For me, I listen to music and my mind just goes with it. Third Form 1. A few days ago was internationally recognized as Mental Day, how have you been taking care of yourself since the start of third form mentally? Good. I stuck with my brothers (friends) and stopped communicating with others. 2. Third form is a pivotal year for you as this year you are expected to choose nine (9) CSEC subjects while also deciding on your field of study for the future. How do you feel about this decision? I think it fair as I am the one who will make this decision; it will be something I want to do and not something I have no interest in. I am confident I will make the right decision. 3. Mid-term assessments have begun; do you believe that you are sufficiently prepared for the upcoming exams? I did not study but I believe I am prepared for my exams. 4. How did you utilize the mid-term break to sufficiently prepare for your exams? I did nothing regarding exams; however, I did play a little football. 5. Do you have any advice for other students who might dislike studying or struggle to study any subject in general? Just like how we easily memorize the lyrics of songs, we can make our own little songs to help us study. Fifth Form 1. You are now on the last lap of the CSEC marathon, how has the transition been for you from fourth form to fifth form? To be honest, it has been a ‘rocky’ transition; it was challenging to cope in the beginning. 2. What profession have you decided to pursue in the future and your current subjects that you plan to sit next year? My career path is currently undecided ad I am still trying to figure out what I want to do in life. I will be sitting Physical Education, Religious Education, Social Studies, Agricultural Science, Information Technology, English Language, English Literature and Mathematics. 3. A few days ago was internationally recognized as Mental Day, how have you been taking care of yourself since the start of fifth form mentally? I don’t know, but I am trying to take things one day at a time. 4. Mid-term assessments have begun; do you believe that you are sufficiently prepared for the upcoming exams? No, I spent more time focusing on my mental health. 5. How did you utilize the mid-term break to sufficiently prepare for your exams? Well… I needed a break ‘mentally’ so I did activities I enjoyed, for example singing and drawing. 6. Do you have any advice for other students who might dislike studying or struggle to study any subject in general? I would recommend taking breaks while studying. Studying for a long time without breaks leaves you tired and at a loss.

HOME SEARCH RESULTS SPORTS BIRTHDAY WISHES SCHOOL CLUBS IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS STUDENT WELFARE DEAR PRINCIPAL DEAR LOWER SCHOOL STUDENT LIFE INSPIRATIONAL CORNER DaCosta Cup Footballers Suffer Defeat at the Hands of the Reigning Champions by Tyreece Myles | Oct 20, 2022, deCarteret College made it through the group stages and went on to the second round of the DaCosta Cup competition for the first time since 2015. Getting to the second round, which is the knockout round of the competition, was seven years in the making. Unfortunately, it was in the second round that the road would end for deCarteret College. After making it through the group stages, deCarteret College had to draw a team to play in the second round. Unfortunately, they drew Garvey Maceo high school who were the reigning champions of the competition. Garvey Maceo boasts an elite team that would be a great force to reckon with no matter who the opposition was. It would prove to be an extremely difficult contest for the boys and despite their valiant effort, they slumped to defeat. The first leg, which was held at Brooks Park, ended in a painful five-nil (5-0) defeat. This was a tough pill for the team to swallow. But the worst was yet to come. For in the return fixture Garvey Maceo scored double their previous tally with a thunderous ten-nil (10-0) score line. These two games combined into an unfathomable fifteen-nil (15-0) aggregate score for Garvey Maceo who moved on to the next round. Despite making a second-round exit, and in the manner that they did, we must commend our boys for the incredible effort shown to get to that point. Although it was not to be, the team showed class and character to force their way out of the group stages, which was not an easy task. They showed a lot of passion, determination, quality, effort, and courage. They showed us what a deCarteret College Football team is truly capable of. And that is why, without a doubt, deCarteretCollege will come back stronger and better next year. Simply because the team exhibited the qualities of true winners. Finally, we acknowledge that the team could not do it on their own. And so we must appreciate those who helped them along the way. The coaching and managerial staff played a massive role in guiding the boys and deserve a huge round of applause. The deCarteret College Alumni were undoubtedly one of, if not the biggest supporters of the football team. The support from the entire deCarteret College family was immense and deserves to be highlighted. They were at times the twelfth player on the team. They spurred the team on in the face of adversity and motivated them to keep going. Without their support, it would have been an even more difficult task to make it out of the group stages. One can only hope that the team is not too disheartened by their exit and the manner of their defeat and can find it within themselves to go again. Next year they will be back to challenge and will hopefully be able to replicate what they have done this year
