HOME SEARCH RESULTS SPORTS BIRTHDAY WISHES SCHOOL CLUBS IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS STUDENT WELFARE DEAR PRINCIPAL DEAR LOWER SCHOOL STUDENT LIFE INSPIRATIONAL CORNER CHESS CLUB The Jamaica Chess Federation hosted it’s annual High school tournament on November 29 and 30 in Clarendon at Glenmuir High school. The deCartret College’s chess team was in attendance with an A and B team comprising of four members and some substitute players and we are happy to announce that both teams have made it through the Middlesex bracket to the next round of the National Playoffs next year in January. We solicit your support for the team as they engage in rigorous training for the upcoming playoff. Interviewer: Jada Brooks Interviewee: Jonathon Saunders 1. What inspired you to do chess? Funny enough, the decision to start chess was not democratic. My mother decided that I was going to join the chess club in grade 6, and that was that. As a result I didn't like it for a long time until I discovered that chess gave me a conversation starter. Believe it or not, I began to fully appreciate chess by 3rd form. 2. Is there a specific goal in mind for the chess club? The club has two goals actually: To increase the popularity of chess within deCarteret College, and to improve the skill of the chess club members with the hope of creating a culture of chess. 3. The club recently entered its first ever Chess Tournament; can you describe the tournament and how you think the members of the club (yourself included) felt? The tournament took place at Glenmuir High School over two days. There were a number of other schools present from the central region: Belair, Vere technical, Steths, Denbigh, and of course Glenmuir deCarteret college sent up two teams: the A team and the B team. I along with some of the other members of the chess team had been to our fair share of tournaments. Admittedly, I was nervous, but more so curious about what would happen. The other members seemed a little nervous as well, as expected. The tournament itself was very fun. There was a certain air of camaraderie, and despite the fact that we were playing against other schools, we managed to bond with members of the teams from the other schools. 4. In regards to the tournament, do you believe the club achieved what they wanted to accomplish? I do believe we accomplished what we wanted. The decision to attend the tournament was in essence a spontaneous one. The chess club had to choose the individuals who would represent the school at this tournament. As a result of attending the tournament, the chess club now has a chess teacher preparing us for the playoffs to occur in January. Additionally the members of the team undeniably gained priceless experience from this venture. This tournament also gives prospective members of the chess team something to look forward to; they can work hard and practice up in hopes. 5. Is there any advice to the current and future members of the Chess Club? I would say to play as much as you can with all different types of people. Also find a good chess based Youtube channel that you can learn from.

HOME SEARCH RESULTS SPORTS BIRTHDAY WISHES SCHOOL CLUBS IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS STUDENT WELFARE DEAR PRINCIPAL DEAR LOWER SCHOOL STUDENT LIFE INSPIRATIONAL CORNER DEBATE CLUB Interviewer: Jada Brooks Interviewee: 1. What does debating mean to you? Debating means arguing a point or thought with another person. 2. A day in the life of a debate member… describe it. A day in the life of a debate member is exciting, fun, and engaging. In the club, there’s never a dull moment when you have a debate. The members will always support you no matter which side you are and they are friendly as well. We don’t always have debates, but sometimes we play fun games such as ‘Atoms’ or create fun games like pass the ball and debate whereas when you get the ball you debate on a point and pass it to another person. 3. Is there a specific goal you aim to achieve within the debate club/team? There is an aim I wish to achieve within the Debate Society and it is to make the club more active in school and do more stuff that’s not just only debating but more like advocacy. As for the debate team, my only aim is to push them to be the best team there is. 4. You recently had a debate competition… what was the preparation for this event like? Well, the preparation for the competition was not easy, there were some days when we had to skip our extracurriculars to meet and prepare, and some days when we couldn’t meet. In the end, we had Google Meets to accommodate everyone and there we wrote our speeches and rehearsed them. 5. Anything you would like to say to your current and future members of the club? I would like to say to my current members to keep on pushing the club and build it to be the best version of itself and to my future members of the club, I hope you may still continue to build the club.

HOME SEARCH RESULTS SPORTS BIRTHDAY WISHES SCHOOL CLUBS IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS STUDENT WELFARE DEAR PRINCIPAL DEAR LOWER SCHOOL STUDENT LIFE INSPIRATIONAL CORNER DANCE CLUB Interviewer: Jada Brooks Interviewee: Mikaylia Robinson 1. You formed the Dance Club during your third year. What drove this idea? This story dates back to February of 2019. Myself and Micalia Campbell (Vice President) were observing the Jamaica Day dance performance. Though the choreography was quite entertaining, we realized that it lacked key elements of dance- dynamics, spatial awareness and energy. Hereafter, we began to question the conception of a dance club for the school. It was all hands on deck moving forward with this mere idea. Dovani Isaacs (Assistant Vice President) was introduced to this idea, and the dynamic trio quickly sought the help of Mrs. Lewison to kick start the initiative. 2. What is your aim or mission in regards to your club? My aim for the club is to foster and highlight talent at deCarteret College. As a performance club, it is imperative that our members evolve through their expression. Whether it be performing on stage or leading during club period, our club looks to students who can uphold leadership. 3. What is a day in the life of a member of the Dance Club? Being a member of the dance club entails attending school like everyone else. The only difference comes in when we commit ourselves every Monday afternoon, as well as some Saturdays to rehearse for the upcoming recital in January. 4. You have gotten this far with the club ; tell me how you feel. The club celebrated its 3 year anniversary this year. Though I am grateful for all we have accomplished thus far, we (the executive) are still trying to catch up for lost time due to the pandemic. To be frank, an online dance club was not the ideal scenario, but I am blessed to be back face to face to end this journey, on a high note, in my final year. Stay tuned, else you might miss it! 5. You will be graduating next year. Anything you would like to say to the current and future members of the club? If there is one thing that I would say to them, it would be to keep the dream alive. I pass the baton to them and I have given everything I can over the 3 year tenure to ensure that the dance club’s family stays afloat. The decision is theirs whether or not the club sinks or swims. Remain the reputable club, remain active, maintain the standards that we have set as the foundation for which this initiative stands.
